Understanding

So, You find youself getting a "Handle" on this SMART REBT "Stuff"… But for some reason it is not working as expected. Look to your thoughts, or better yet your Belief System. If you say things that start off with good rational premises and then followed by the word "But"…

Well...

Maybe Your "But" is Getting in the Way.

THE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UNDERSTANDING AND INTEGRATION
From Brief Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy by Windy Dryden

As I discussed … When she just understands the rational solution to her problems, she can see why her irrational beliefs are irrational and why her rational beliefs are rational, but she believes this lightly and only occasionally, usually at times when she is not facing relevant, critical A's. Furthermore, mere understanding of this rational solution has minimal impact on her thoughts, feelings and behaviour, with the result that she will still respond to relevant, critical A's with the same unhealthy negative emotions and self-defeating behaviours which were her responses before she understood the rational solution. It is thus possible to say that while she has integrated this understanding into her knowledge system, she has not integrated it into her belief system.

However, when she has been able to integrate the rational solution into her belief system, she not only sees why her irrational beliefs are irrational and why her rational beliefs are rational, but she believes this strongly and frequently even when she is facing relevant, critical A's. Furthermore, integrating this rational solution has a decided beneficial impact on her thoughts, feelings and behaviour, with the result that she is able to respond to relevant, negative critical A's with healthy negative emotions and self-enhancing behaviours. Here is how I helped Carol to understand this basic difference.

(the reference to A's is the REBT representation for Life Events)

CONSIDERATIONS

1. The basic difference between understanding the rational solution and integrating it into one's belief system.

2. The importance of developing a large number of persuasive arguments against irrational beliefs and a similarly large number in support of rational beliefs.

3. The importance of taking action.

4. The importance of using force and energy in the integration process.

5. The importance of vividness in the integration process.

6. The importance of repetition, persistence and regularity in the integration process (even when nothing is happening).

7. The importance of doing things uncomfortably and unconfidently and with putting up with feeling unnatural during the integration process.

8. The importance of understanding and dealing with obstacles to integration.
