What is REBT? REBT is a practical, action-oriented approach to coping with problems and enhancing personal growth. REBT places a good deal of its focus on the present: on currently-held attitudes, painful emotions and maladaptive behaviors that can sabotage a fuller experience of life. REBT also provides people with an individualized set of proven techniques for helping them to solve problems. REBT practitioners work closely with people, seeking to help uncover their individual set of beliefs (attitudes, expectations and personal rules) that frequently lead to emotional distress. REBT then provides a variety of methods to help people reformulate their dysfunctional beliefs into more sensible, realistic and helpful ones by employing the powerful REBT technique called "disputing." Ultimately, REBT helps people to develop a philosophy and approach to living that can increase their effectiveness and happiness at work, in living successfully with others, in parenting and educational settings, in making our community and environment healthier, and in enhancing their own health and personal welfare. - Albert Ellis Institute

My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute. —Ayn Rand, Appendix to Atlas Shrugged

To those seaching for truth -- not the truth of dogma and darkness but the truth brought by reason, search, examination, and inquiry, discipline is required. For faith, as well intentioned as it may be, must be built on facts, not fiction -- faith in fiction is a damnable false hope. - Thomas Alva Edison

Why should I fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is. I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do? - Epicurus

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. - Albert Einstein

It is grossly selfish to require of one's neighbour that he should think in the same way, and hold the same opinions. Why should he? If he can think, he will probably think differently. If he cannot think, it is monstrous to require thought of any kind from him. -- Oscar Wilde. The Soul of Man Under Socialism, in Fortnightly Review (1891; 1895)

If you would be a real seeker after truth, you must at least once in your life doubt, as far as possible, all things - Descartes

The human understanding, once it has adopted an opinion...draws all things
else to support and agree with it. And although there may be a greater
number and weight of instances to be found on the other side, yet these it
either neglects or despises...in order that its former conclusions may
remain inviolate. - Francis Bacon

"If we knew we were on the right road, having to leave it would mean
endless despair. But we are on a road that only leads to a second one, and
then to a third one, and so forth. And the real highway will not be sighted
for a long, long time, perhaps never. So we drift in doubt, but also in
unbelievable diversity and beauty. Thus the accomplishment of hopes always
remains an unexpected miracle...but the miracle remains forever
possible." Franz Kafka, Diaries.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit."
