The old motto "Rome wasn't built in a day" applies to changing behavior. A well established behavior may have taken years to perfect - so don't expect it to be reversed overnight.

SMART recommends abstinence. Our experience is that abstinence is easier to achieve and easier to maintain. In particular, we observe that many addictive substances impair judgement and reasoning faculties, making a person less effective at maintaining a changed behavior.

Although SMART's recommendation is clear, many of us have experienced lapses, returning to former behaviors. This pattern is quite common. Sometimes a person may lapse several times. If this happens to you, we recommend you treat it as an opportunity to learn, to strengthen your resolve and to improve your understanding of yourself. A lapse is not sinful, and no one here will reproach you or judge you. Rather, we would like to learn from your experience.

Be patient with yourself, but persistent. The rewards are usually well worth the effort.
