If we keep doing the same things over and over, we are likely to get the same outcome. Learning how to change habitual patterns into new healthier behaviors can take developing and using some new skills.

Consider some of the many activities such as the arts, music, craftsmanship, or sports, just to name a few, that require skills. Would you expect a person to be accomplished at any of those things the first or second time they tried it? That would not be logical would it? Attaining the goal of Self Management by employing the same efforts of patience, persistence and practice of what you learn here at SMART is really no different than becoming accomplished at anything else you would pursue. It can be important to know that progress is not always in a neat, straight line. Trial and error are part of a process that can lead to success, which with some hindsight maybe found to have arrived only because of your after having persisted. So don’t give up no matter what!

Thinking that you tried once, twice or multilple times and it did not work is only valid if you have not changed "at All", which is not possible ! Reading and learning some of what you have from this tutorial alone can position you to attempt a goal for the first time from a new perspective. The past is GONE!

SMART encourages patience, persistance and practice of the skills that CAN be learned by you. It might not even take as long as you BELIEVE it might! Many have been able to learn these skills and apply them to create happier lives.

You might wish to ask yourself if you really think that you are different than they were, essentially. Many of them once thought that they might not be able to recover either.

Learning to understand the power of our BELIEFS is central to the work of SMART. Accepting that it may have taken you some time to get to a place in which you desire change and that it may take you a little bit of time to effect that change will be helpful for you.
