The science shows clearly that the use of labels is at best, neutral. At worst, it may create a self-fulfilling prophecy. To be more specific however, to give an all inclusive label or desription of ourselves, is next to impossible. Of the thousands of things we do... of the myriad of aspects that make up our existence... which label are you to use ? Which one is most accurate ? Finally, labels tend to focus on what we "Do" as opposed to "Self". This subtle but significant differentiation is a philosophical foundation to other important concepts of SMART and elements of mental health. Consequently, SMART, "seeing" the potential traps and inherant inaccruacy of labels, simply encourages individuals to use them sparingly, and if used, to "mind" the context. . |
