Believing things that are "Rational", ( logical and flexible) seldom causes us distress. Believing "Irrational" ( illogical, inflexible) things creates "Distressful" feelings. Here is an example:
Suppose you believe that you can NEVER ever leave addiction behind. That would create some major discomfort, feelings of impairment for most. Now is there any real evidence of this belief being true? If it were true that people could NEVER leave addiction behind, would anyone ever have been able to do it? No… but people have done it, so it is possible. Now… if they could do it, then you could do it too...right? How about if you found out how they accomplished it and tried to emulate that method? That would be logical wouldn’t it? so you could do it too, right? Yes, you could. Now how would that feel, thinking that you COULD leave addiction behind and having a method ... a plan? It would feel much better, and you could feel some hope and joy about living instead of feeling worthless and defeated, right? How did you change those feelings? You changed what you believed ! This is how REBT works…learning how to change your beliefs to alter your feelings, behaviors and outcomes ! by Betty |
