The Bible (Proverbs 23:7):
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

Pogo:
Oliver Hazard Perry, the famous naval commander in the War of 1812, sent a message back to General William Henry Harrison after Perry’s forces had won the Battle of Lake Erie: “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.” This victorious message became a well-known quotation. Then Pogo, Walt Kelly’s comic strip character, applied it to human nature and gave it a humorous twist: “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”
