Let's say there was this bus, with 30 people on board. The bus was involved in a small "accident", an event ... a low speed "fender bender" in traffic.

Now, even with all 30 people experiencing the same event, it would be safe to say that there would be many different individual reactions. Some folks would be angry, others scared, others laughing, while others calmly waiting.

This illustrates the concept that there is nothing inherant in the event itself that dictates a certain feeling or behavior. Feelings and Behaviors are dependent on what each specific indiviual believes, or thinks, ABOUT the event.

This concept is not new. It comes from the ancients and has survived the test of time across many philosophcal perspectives.

Epictetus was an eminent Stoic philosopher, born as a slave at Hieropolis in Phyrgia in 55 CE. SMART's core concept is contained in one of Epictetus' statements :

Actions do not disturb people,
but opinions about actions disturb people;
